« There are some things that God won’t let us find through instruction, He’ll only let us find it through adventure » - Bill Johnson.
I heard these words this morning in a teaching that I was listening to, and it really stuck with me...
Bill Johnson wasn’t saying that instruction isn’t important - after all, the Word is living and active and full of power, we NEED it’s instruction.
What he WAS saying though, was that instruction that is not being put into practice, won’t avail to much. More importantly so, he was making the point that we can learn many important things ONLY by watching the Father (as Jesus did) without ever receiving instruction on it through the Word. A good example would be when Jesus healed a blind man by applying mud to his eyes. Yet He never taught on « how to heal the blind using mud » … LOL. In that moment, He was living the adventure of simply doing what He saw the Father doing by listening to what the Holy Spirit was saying.
In practical terms, what does this look like to you and me?
It means that we must have a daily, close relationship with Holy Spirit. 24/7 actually. Cultivating regular and ongoing communication with Him is the only way of learning how to hear His input at all times.
It also means that often times, when God has already given you instruction on something, He will shut up and wait for you to act on it, because it is action that brings true activation.
An example from my life:
God spoke to us 6 years ago about moving to a specific place in France in the mountains. His instructions were very clear, yet at some point it was up to us to do as we were guided to. As we did, everything happened EXACTLY as He had said it would. It was mind boggling!
He had said that He was bringing me to the mountain to talk to me there, and He absolutely did (and is doing) just that in a way that is unlike anything I have experienced with Him in my 28 years of knowing Him!
At the same time (time of the move) He was talking to us about moving to the Western Cape 6 years later. Holy Spirit clearly spoke to me one day:
« Your move to the mountains was meant to be a foretaste of your move to South Africa. As it happened during the first move, it will be during the next. »
As we are preparing for our move back to South Africa in about 3 months time, I am amazed at the number of things that happen in a similar way than during our first move. For example, before we moved to the mountains, Holy Spirit told me that my son would choose to stay there with his father (my ex husband) but that he would choose to join us later. It happened exactly like that and a year later he did ask to join us. Now, again, my son has chosen to stay in France to study, but the fact that God had taken care so well of him during that initial year of seperation, gives me such confidence in His capacity to look after my child once again!
Also, we moved to the mountains with no job security, yet God provided in the way He had promised. Once again we are moving to South Africa not knowing how exactly we will generate an income, yet now I know that my Provider has gone before us and is preparing a way already !
This morning I was thinking that God had not said much lately about our move back home… but then I realized that He had already said enough! In fact, what we still need to know, we won (and can’) find through instruction, but we will find it through adventure - through a life entangled with His Spirit!
The link will take you to the YouTube teaching that I have listened to this morning by Bill Johnson. I highly recommend it!
